DOT Physicals Q & A

What are DOT physicals?

DOT physicals are medical exams completed by a licensed medical examiner from the

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry.

Emily is authorized to complete DOT exams to help you obtain and maintain a commercial driver’s license. She issues medical examiner certificates upon successful completion of your exam.

Who may need DOT physicals?

You likely need a DOT physical if you operate vehicles that carry a large number of people, are heavy and used for interstate commerce, or transport hazardous materials. Common examples include semi-trucks and buses.

Your employer lets you know if you need a commercial driver’s license for your job. You might also need one if you’re a business owner who operates commercial motor vehicles.

What should I bring to my DOT physical?

Bring the following with you to DOT physicals at Empowered Health and Wellness:

  • Photo identification (driver’s license)
  • Form of payment
  • Insurance card (if you have one)
  • List of medications and past diagnoses
  • Glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you wear them

If you have any questions before your scheduled DOT exam, the friendly Empowered Health and Wellness specialists will happily assist you.

What should I expect during DOT physicals?

During a DOT physical, Emily checks your vital signs and reviews your medical history, lifestyle, medications, and symptoms. She completes a physical exam to assess your appearance, ears, eyes, throat, heartbeat, breathing, limbs, and more.

You also undergo vision and hearing screenings and may need blood tests, urine testing, and screening for diabetes, heart disease, asthma, or allergies based on your symptoms and medical history. Your employer may require drug or alcohol testing.

What happens after DOT physical exams?

If you meet DOT exam requirements, Emily issues you a medical examiner’s certificate (DOT medical card) required to obtain and maintain a commercial driver’s license. You receive a copy of the medical examiner’s certificate, and your results are reported to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

How often do I need DOT physicals?

Emily will let you know when to schedule your next exam. DOT physical exams are usually valid for up to two years — or a shorter length of time if you have high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, or another chronic condition.

Check with your employer to ensure you’re up-to-date with all DOT requirements.
